It would depend how your work network is set up. It could be VPN able or other things. Best bounce this off your work system admin.

These softwares are simpler than VNC. They can go through firewalls because they primarily use port 80, same port you use for surfing.

Try VNC, is a alternate remote desktop software, it can be used on unix, linux windows, etc… it’s a very cool software.
As remote desktop, you need to have a fast connection (at least DSL) to have a session acceptable.

You need to setup a VPN connection from your home to your work, that is the most secure connection, there are other programs out there the will allow you to connect to your desk top over port 5800 and 5900, but they have all been hacked, the most secure way is a VPN connection over PPTP or L2TP then connedt to your computer woth Remote Desktop.
or any other Software like VNC over the VPN, but do not open ports 5800 or 5900 on your firewall.
