It depends on what state you live in. For example Texas is a "Right to Work" state, which means that an employer can fire you for any (non-discriminatory) reason. It also means you can quit for any reason.

If you were looking for a job on company time, that could be grounds for termination.

If you are an "At Will" employee or live in a "Right to Work" state he can fire you you for any reason, but if the termination was not justified, you can file for unemployment.

it depends if you’re an at will employee or not.

Even if it is, they can keep scrutinize your job performance and fire you for some minor infraction unrelated to looking for work.

Probably not illegal, but certainly unethical and immoral.

If you’re doing it at work, of course he can. You can’t sit there and flip through the want ads or search the net if you’re sitting at your desk and supposed tobe working.

It depends on what state you are currently working in. California for example is a "right to work state". They can fire you for mostly anything and be exempt from prosectution due to the "right to work clause". In other states things are different and it could be illegal.

well if he fired you for looking just go and get unemployment till you find a new one it is better to get fired than to quit by quiting you are on your own with no benefits

No it’s not illegal, because ur probably an at-will employee, which means they can fire you w/o a solid reason. Besides, if u were my employee i would fire you for searching the internet instead of working:-) just joking.

By looking for a new job, while employed by another company… aren’t you displaying the same disloyalty?

In most states you’re not guaranteed a job.

It’s not like you were planing on working there forever.
