Hi! :D

I should be completed with my associates degree when I’m 20 1/2. I WAS planning to transfer to a university and finish the last 2 years for a bachelor’s…but I REALLY want to become a Marine SO bad. Would I be able to finish my 2 years of undergrad work while in the Corps? I wouldn’t mind if it took a little longer

I need to start working on my life and not stay at home free loading off of my parents, although I’m in college. I feel that I have not achieved anything…I am sure that I will feel differently about my achievements once I become a Marine.

Is this reasonable? I CANNOT be living with my parents until 23-24 y/o for a bachelor’s…it’s just not going to happen with the way my family is.

Also: NROTC would be nice, but my SAT score isn’t high enough…even though I have a high GPA in rigorous junior college coursework.
4.0 GPA .
One of the reasons that I can’t wait is b/c I live in a emotionally abusive and controlling environment. I know bootcamp is like this and I can deal with this , but difference is….it isn’t from your own flesh and blood.
Trust me, I’m in outstanding shape. 6-7 minute mile runner :D
How high is your juco GPA? your odds of getting an NROTC 2 year MO Scholarship are really low, especially if you aren’t in outstanding shape… The Marines give out very VERY few scholarships and prefer to let the Marine Option MIDN in as college programmers and see if they can hack it, you can’t do that with a two year program, and getting into OCS is EXTREMELY difficult with the Marines. Anyone who says that if you have a college degree you should be an Officer is a moron, 99% of people with degrees wouldn’t get into Marine OCS. My recommendation is to just enlist now, serve four years, then you can use your GI Bill after and get your degree (and get paid to do it)

I’ve been in the military for eight years and my advice is to get your bachelor’s degree and then join as an officer. TRUST me. You will kick yourself if you join now when you could’ve waited and joined as an officer. It would be pretty difficult to finish your degree once in. It’s possible but most higher level courses for a bachelor’s degree are going to be offered during the time you will need to be at work. Plus you could only take one to two classes at a time. That’s all you would have time for.

Just slow down and be patient. If you wait and join as an officer, your pay is going to be much, much better. Go online to military.com and check out the pay scales.

coming in with 2 YR get you E3 coming in with a BA get you O1 or O2

pay alone is big diff
and life style is way big but it up to you what you want …i know some who don’t want to be officer just want to be enlistee and have the paper’s in school to be officer but turned it down

when i was in the army there was a guy in civilian life was a doctor but he enlisted as a national guard as a private and would not take a commission so they couldn’t do anything but let him be a E3 and just be a medic …funny but true he said am not a doctor just a medic and he was a great surgeon too and the army tried to get him to be a doctor but his contract said he was an E3 and stayed that way

Go ahead, sign up for three or four years in the Marines. Going enlisted isn’t as bad as a lot of people think it is, I did it with a full degree.

You can use the GI Bill to finish your degree when you get out. It will also give you enough to live on while you study. Since you’ve already taken your lower level prerequisites, you won’t have to deal with taking Freshman Comp with a bunch of 18 year olds.

Good luck with your decision.

you have 2 years till you get a bachelors degree. you can either enlist now and take maybe 4 years to get your degree while you’re in. there’s a good chance you will never get your degree until you are out of the military. i remember in the final two years of my schooling, there were courses that only had only one class in the middle of the day. you will never be able to take that course if you’re in the military.

if NROTC isn’t an option, then it isn’t an option. OCS could be an option, but i’m sure it’s very selective. it’s up to you to make your application package as good as it can be by doing volunteer work, playing sports etc.

sometimes living with your parents is a sacrifice that both you and your parents have to make. it’s not easy, but maybe it just has to be done for the next two years. or maybe get a part time job and see if you can’t get some grants or loans to pay for school. my point is don’t delay your degree, it’s going to be very hard to get back into it at a later time.

the marines are always going to be there. you can enlist or try to get a commission after you get your degree, and it’ll be just as easy as it would be if you were to try now. it will be infinitely more difficult to get your degree if you wait.
